Introduction to Healthcare Strategy

Colorado State University Global Campus

Description

Scenario: The CEO, Emergency Department Director and you having been reviewing the data concerning ED throughput. There has been a significant rise in ED patient visits from 32,000/year to 45,000/year as well as the patient acuity has risen requiring the use of additional ancillary services (e.g., radiology, laboratory services) which is creating much bottleneck in patient flow. As a result, patients are leaving without being seen, increasing the rate from 3% to an all-time high of 10%.

The CEO would like you to perform a SWOT analysis to identify the factors that are key in getting the ED stabilized with the new volume of patients. The CEO has requested that you provide a presentation to the ED Steering Committee (e.g., ED physicians, ED Director, charge nurses and staff members) about your SWOT analysis findings. The ED Steering Committee’s will be essential in moving this work forward.

You can use the data from the case study that preceded Chapter 1 in the textbook to assist you in the SWOT analysis.

SWOT Analysis and Emergency Department Throughput
Introduction
Emergency Department or ED is an integral part of health care services, helping in the
provision of speedy medical service to patients with acute medical conditions. Our hospital has
had a significant increase in the number of ED patient visits 32,000 to 45,000 patients per year.
In addition, the rate of patient acuity has also been on the rise, necessitating the use of additional
ancillary services such as the laboratory and radiology services. This leads to overcrowding of
patients in the waiting rooms, as well as longer waiting time before they receive treatment
(Asaro, & Boxerman, 2007). As a result, the patient flow slows down, leading to the increase in
patients who leave without being seen or what is commonly known as LWBS. The hospital’s
LWBS rate has increased from 3 percent to an all-time high of 10 percent. This is a clear
indication that the health care facility needs significant changes in order to be able to effectively
serve new volume of patients.
Mission and Vision
The main objective of this presentation is to come up with effective solutions for the
current emergency department problems. The main problem that is currently facing the health
care facility is its inability to provide timely medical care for all patients visiting the hospital,
because their number has significantly increased. As a result, most patients end up going back
without treatment because of the long queues of patients waiting to be attended to. This report,
therefore, explores the inadequacies of the hospital and the strategies that can be put in place to
improve them, so that all patients can be able to receive quality treatment without delay.

The SWOT Analysis
In order to determine the precise issues that cause inefficiency in the hospital, leading to
increased LWBS and patient acuity, the assessment uses the SWOT analysis approach to study
the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats of the hospital’s operation. This helps
conducting an in-depth analysis of all components of the hospital, on order to discover all the
areas that need improvement, considering the increasing number of patients. The number of
health care personnel and equipment’s in the hospital can only serve specific number patients at
a given time, and therefore the rise in ED patients calls for the increase of doctors and nurses, as
well as the critical resources that are needed for treatment of the patients.
Strengths
Our hospital has many capabilities that give it a huge advantage over the other health care
institutions in the state. Examples include the following:
Reputation. The reputation of the hospital is exceptional. This is because of the quality
services it has been offering its patients ever since it was established, as well as the active role it
has played in promoting a healthy community through various programs. As a result, it has
earned the trust of the community as the leading health care provider in the state. The positive
reputation also attracts support from different partners and stakeholders within and outside the
state, who contribute to the development agenda of the hospital.
Technology. The hospital has some of the latest medical service technology equipment’s
that ensure delivery of quality health service to ...
