Atherosclerosis, otherwise known as arteriosclerotic vascular disease is a severe medical
condition that causes contract of arteries, which makes them hard due to the accumulation of
plaque (Bennett, Sinha & Owens, 2016). Arteries are responsible for the transport of oxygenated
blood from the heart to the rest of the body. Their blockage thus limits blood flow to the
designated body organs depriving them of oxygen, which leads to multiple organ failure.
Carotid artery disease, a common form of atherosclerosis is caused when the arteries
transporting blood to the brain are affected. In the United States of America alone, statistics
show that about half a million people succumb to this condition annually. Blocking of the renal
artery consequently leads to kidney failure. Similarly, pulmonary embolism occurs when there is
a blockage of arteries leading to the lungs. ...
