Family Assessment Experience
A family assessment offers an opportunity to sit down with a family and develop an
understanding of who they are to formulate an effective treatment plan. The family assessment
experience necessitates keen observation skills and the capability to listen actively. Assessment
data is collected anytime the clinician interacts with the family. In most instances, gathering data
about the family structure, functions, and needs do not take place in structured interviews, but
anytime a therapist holds a session with the family members. A clinician considers various
assessment tools that collect information about the family system, functionality, culture, and
experience. Before selecting any tool to use, a clinician should consider the developmental
framework of a child, requirements for early interventions, and the confidentiality of information
and tone of the tool.
The three family instruments- The Family Adaptability and Cohesion Evaluation Scale
IV (FACE), the Family Assessment Device (FAD), and the Self-Report Family Inventory (SFI)
are similar since they do not only offer a framework for interaction in which to categorize the
family functionality, but they are assessment models that facilitate testing and evaluation of
families. They are models, tools that assess family and give information researchers use to test
the validity of each model and its instruments (Baptist, Thompson, Norton, Hardy & Link, 2012).
