Social identity relates to how behavior and identity vary situationally based on a persons concept of themselves as either individuals or as members of groups. Our social identity can group us people together based on religious affiliation (Jewish, Christian, etc.) or political party (Democratic, Republican, etc.) or someone could even have multiple identities (Jewish Democrat, Christian Republican, etc.). These are just examples of some different groups we identify ourselves with, there are many social identities everywhere you go. Social identity can provide people with a sense of self-esteem and a framework for socializing. Social identities have positive and negative outcomes as well.
