Introduction

President Trump’s policy on immigration is considered by critics as
inhumane and source of racial tensions in the country.

The Democratic party is against his request for funds for the construction of
a border wall.

After failing to use a government shutdown to force the U.S Congress to
approve his budget for border wall, President Trump has declared a national
emergency to get funds for the project.

While opinions remain divided on the actions of the presidency, a review of
the historical stances of the Democratic Party on immigration showed that it
was against illegal immigrants.

party as supporters of immigrants in the United States?

Historical Actions of the Democratic Party

government.

President Bill Clinton used the need to strengthen border protection to
convince Congress to pass the Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant
Responsibility Act of 1996.

Interestingly, the Democratic Party campaign platforms in 2008 were used
to promote increase border protection through the recruitment of more
Customs and Border Patrol agents.

An analysis of the evolution of the Democrats’ current position on
immigration revealed several issues that reflect the evolution of the
American society.

First, high crimes by immigrants due to open borders informed the
position of the party two decades ago.

Secondly, the perspective of the American public that immigrants
create labor issues such as low wages and job losses for citizens
influenced the policy actions of its elected officials.

Thirdly, members of the party were not as diverse as they are now,
which has made the support of civil rights and labor groups essential
for the change in policy perspective.
