The concept of Emotional Intelligence (EI) surrounds the idea of recognizing, managing
and understanding personal emotions. The approach also touches on the ability to understand,
acknowledge and influence other people’s feelings. In the process, a person is in control of their
emotions and able to handle any impacts of the emotions of people with which they associate.
Such instances provide an appropriate environment for harmonious relationships to thrive.
Additionally, the ability to handle other people’s feelings requires a high level of emotional
maturity (Mangal & Mangal, 2015). In essence, EI is of having smart emotions. In this regard,
smart feelings means that an individual has absolute control of their emotions and understand the
appropriate ways of taking advantage of a situation available. Being in control of one’s emotions
is advantageous as it prevents unnecessary confrontation and also assists in finding a solution.
Goleman’s five dimensions of EI are;


Self-awareness – being aware of the emotions one has.



Self-regulation – having the ability to regulate the, especially under pressure.



Social skills – having the ability to associate with others on a social level.



Empathy – being able to think about the well-being of others.



Motivation – being personally motivated without outside pressure.
