The emergence of social media has had a phenomenal impact on social activism.
Anderson, Toor, Rainie, & Smith (2018) argue that social media has opened up a wide range of
opportunities for all spheres of life including education, advertising, hiring, politics, social
activism and many others. This paper argues on the advantages of social media in social activism
and the opportunities it offers to both individuals and organizations.
Social media is a vital tool in social activism because it enables for convergence of many
people in one platform, thus enabling for easy sharing of content or information, as well as
influencing of other individuals (Anderson et al., 2018). This can well be seen through the
#BlackLivesMatter activism, which has remained a core hashtag in advocating for less police
violence and brutality towards backs. The hashtag has been a success considering that 5 years
down the line, it has attracted over 30 million individuals speaking and writing about it on social
media platforms. The hashtag was coined in 2013 due to the killing of Trayvon Martin and had
on average been used at least 17,002 times per day as of May 2018 (Anderson et al., 2018). This
hashtag directly indicates how modern political engagement and activism occurs through social
media. The hashtag has been used repeatedly since its first coining.
Social media platforms have also been hailed for enabling a sustained fight for
