Briefly describe at least three treatment approaches for obsessive compulsive disorder that are considered best practices Re: Topic 6 DQ 2 According to Pittenger et al. (2005) indicated that Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Exposure Therapy, and psychotherapy are best practices in treating obsessive-compulsive disorder. The authors detailed that Exposure Therapy combines exposure of the problem along with habitual responses. In exposure therapy approach the individual is faced with deliberately faced with fears and then is refrained from performing the normal response (Pittenger et al., 2005). Medications are also effective along with other treatments in treating obsessivecompulsive disorder. Medications such as Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors affect the neurotransmitter serotonin which then decreases symptoms of obsessive-compulsive disorder. Pittenger et al. indicate that another effective treatment approach is psychotherapy (talk therapy) which implements the usage of psychological and verbal techniques. Pittenger, C., Kelmendi, B., Bloch, M., Krystal, J. H., & Coric, V. (2005). Clinical treatment of obsessive compulsive disorder. Psychiatry (Edgmont (Pa. : Township)), 2(11), 34-43. My response: Good evening Stefanie Re: Topic 6 DQ 2 Briefly describe at least three treatment approaches for obsessive compulsive disorder that are considered best practices. Some of the treatment options for treating obsessive compulsive disorder are: CBT- Cognitive behavioral therapy is a therapy that will help the client work gradually and exposing the client to their feared object or obsession, this type of therapy also helps a client to learn more healthy ways to cope with their anxiety. Medication is another avenue that could be used to help treat obsessive compulsive disorder usually an antidepressant is used such as Prozac, Paxil, Zoloft just to name a few. These type of medications are used to help control the obsessions and compulsions of OCD. With using the medications it is always best to used in conjunction with some of therapy such as CBT. Another form for therapy is electro convulsive therapy (ECT) This therapy is done by a psychiatrist who uses a machine to deliver electric shocks to the brain of the patient. The shock triggers a controlled seizure to activate neurons that bring about changes in neurochemical levels in the brain. This is considered to be a very effective treatment for patients who are diagnosed with obsessive compulsive disorder. Reference: American Addiction Center. (2018).
