The other side of injustice: When unfair procedures increase group
In any social group, there are commonly held beliefs about what is just and unjust. The
group members work together and encourage their members to behave in a certain way. On this
basis, all those willing to associate themselves with a certain group have to follow the group
behavior (Miner, 2011). The common conduct of the members who have a certain social identity
leads to the common serving cooperative behavior. All the members of that group have to behave
in that manner even when it hurting some other people. Due to the unfair procedures found in the
society, these members of these groups insist on behaving in a certain manner which may
perpetuate injustices to other people in the society. On this basis, this literature review aims at
exploring the other side of injustice perpetrated by the group common serving behavior which is
enhanced by the unfair procedures.
The group social identity and procedural fairness work together so as to promote the
group’s serving behavior. According to Rosenmann, Reese & Cameron, one of the very
important features of human life is social groups (Rosenmann Reese & Cameron, 2016). The
group identity guides the behavior and perception of the members. This is easily the case because
of the shared beliefs, values and norms. The social identity helps people to boost their self-worth
by belonging to a certain group and drawing the comparison to other groups. On this basis,
whereas the social identity of the group focuses on how groups manage their collective behavior
as well as status and power relations, it contributes to injustices due to the competition, conflict,
and discrimination which is evident from the way the groups deals with each other (Stephan &
Stephan, 2013). The collective identity which is evident from the way the group members
operate is not only a tool for self-definition but also acts as a psychological tool which influences
the behavior change in a certain group.

When there is procedural fairness, the groups are supposed to promote positive groupserving behavior. However, when there are unfair procedures, the groups apply the normative
content and negative stereotype on the members of other groups (Dover et al, 2015). This leads
to discrimination and isolation of those who are not insiders of the groups. Those who are not
able to fully confirm with the established group- serving behavior are isolated. Consequently, as
a result of these unfair procedures, certain groups utilize their self-serving behaviors to isolate
others non-members in the critical areas of life. They generate a feeling of superiority against
other groups and use this chance to alienate those other groups in the sharing of the resources in
society.
Further, the unfair procedures in the groups lead to injustices because they create a
culture of isolation towards other groups which behaviors in a completely different way from
them. The increase in the group serving behavior has acted as a great impediment to the
liberalization and development of society (Gaertner & Dovidio, 2014). Due to the procedural
unfairness some groups can place themselves strategically between two groups hence influencing
how authorities deal with different groups. When some of the groups are above to increase their
utility as a tool for social worth, then the other groups' are in some cases absorbed leading to
them losing their identity. Injustices result here because the absorbed members lack a chance to
exhibit their social behavior.
The unfair procedures in the society lead to the development of the self-worth,
channeling of the self-expression and the psychological needs of a particular group. The
manipulation of the main social systems of behavior diminishes the changes of the other groups'
chances of having a bright future (Nason, Bacq & Gras, 2018). Some other groups develop a
sense of social control and the anticipated future outcomes which in most cases are never

appealing to the other groups in the society. Interestingly is the fact that the members of the
opposing groups mainly believe in procedural fairness on the running of affairs in the society.
These opposing groups believe that the change of the structures in the society should be
informed by mediated personal mastery of the expected outcomes. Injustices are prevalent in this
case because these opposing groups are left with lean chances of influencing changes to the
social order even when it works to their disadvantage (Trepte & Loy, 2017). It is important to
note that the ideologies which result from the group serving behavior have a very strong impact
especially on the people who are disadvantaged by it. On this basis, there are injustices
perpetuated because the unfair procedures in which increase the groups serving behavior cause
those who are not members of the group lose their social order as in most cases they end up
being forced to adopt ideologies which work to their disadvantage (Miner, 2011). The orders and
ideologies in the society are never driven by merit by one single group which establishes itself as
a bully to other groups.
Additionally, the increased group serving behavior which results from the unfair
procedures perpetuates injustice in the society as they influence how people see the reality. The
increased group serving behavior destabilizes the social order distorts the perception where the
reality is seen based on merit (Barry & Tyler, 2009). It leads to the distortion of the existing
social order in society. Essentially, the status of the things is influenced by the group ideologies
rather than the way the society works. The increased group serving behavior may increase
injustices because the dominant groups believe that the minority group mobility orders are
neither unattainable nor sustainable. It is not fair to expect individuals and minority groups to
quit their position which is considered inferior to adopt the order established by the dominant
group. This frustrates the small groups as they do not give opportunities to the gradual mobility
