You will write a 1-2 page letter about your chosen research paper policy issue emphasis. This formal letter will be addressed to your Congressional representative, either from the House of Representatives or the Senate.
The letter must include: an introduction (introducing the student as a constituent of the Member of Congress), a clear explanation of the policy issue and reason for concern/support, and your intent to research the issue further in your school studies. You should state your position on the issue and ask the Member of Congress to consider this as they formulate and pass future legislation.
Assessment will be based on timeliness, the presence of the required elements, thoughtfulness, professional voice and articulation of the issue. See rubric for full assessment criteria. As there must also be no mechanical errors, you should be prepared to have a peer editor review your letter prior to submission.
