CULTURE AND HEALTH

Cultural background influences one’s perception of health in terms of meaning, cause,
and management of health issues. Different cultures depict different beliefs or arguments about
health. For instance, in my case, I accrue from the American culture and some of our beliefs
concerning health differ from the beliefs of other cultures. To be specific, the African culture, in
which my close friend hails from, entirely differs with the American culture. Nevertheless, both
African and American cultures have a considerable influence on how sicknesses and illnesses are
defined and handled. The case is the same in other cultures too.
Culturally, Americans seek professional medical attention when they fall sick. Research
conducted in 2016 revealed that the US government expenditure on healthcare is almost double
compared to expenditure by other developed nations and over 90% of Americans have a
healthcare cover (Papanicolas, Woskie, & Jha, 2018). That is the most likely reason why fellow
Americans culturally prefer seeking professional healthcare unlike in the African culture where
the perception of patients is different. Most African patients prefer visiting traditional medicine
men/women and that is their culture. Consequently, significant differences in levels in quality of
healthcare emerge due to these facts.
