ENG108: Research Paper Guidelines Your research paper should be 8-10 pages, double-spaced, and formatted in MLA style. It should include a cover page and a Works Cited page, which are not counted as part of the length requirements. The beginning: Your research paper should be organized around a central thesis. This thesis should be based on the research question that has focused your search efforts thus far in the class. The first paragraph should set the stage, introducing your thesis and preparing the readers for what’s to come. Two sample introductory paragraphs are below: Example 1 If the average middle-class American were confronted with the possibility of a hazardous chemical plant or toxic waste site being built in the community in which he and his family lived, chances are he probably wouldn’t stand by silently and allow it to happen. This is, however, the situation that many low income and minority communities are faced with each day. Industrial businesses that may pose a threat to the environment are continually being approved for construction in these areas unopposed by residents. Often times these individuals are ignorant to the potential hazards this new business will bring and are not included in the decision making process for site selections. The voice of the minority group needs to be heard to ensure they receive the same equitable treatment offered to others and are not discriminated against when dealing with the matter of racism created by the effects of environmental injustice. Example 2 The pattern of urban sprawl in Arizona may appear at first glance to be a good thing. Despite its convenience and benefits, however, sprawl is unhealthy and unsustainable and has enormous costs. The economic costs are perhaps the most readily measured. Continued expansion forces municipalities to increase the range of their services, costing taxpayers billions. Equally important are the environmental ramifications of reckless growth. Sprawling growth exacerbates traffic congestion, encroaches upon open spaces, and threatens the health of Arizona’s diverse ecosystems. Most elusive, however, are the unforeseen social consequences; higher crime rates in city centers and even increased rates of obesity can be linked to sprawl. To deal with these issues, local and regional governments should encourage positive growth that offers sustainable and diverse choices to Arizona’s communities. You should then consider providing an overview of the situation. Depending on your project, this could take multiple forms. You might choose to briefly review the resources that you have found on the topic (similar to the review of sources you completed for the proposal). You might choose to discuss historical views on your subject as a way of setting the stage for more recent information. If you used field research, you might start with facts from your secondary research before launching into the results of your field research. Regardless of the approach you take, the goal remains the same—to integrate your reader by providing a thumbnail sketch of the scenario behind your research. The middle: The body of your paper can take a variety of approaches, depending on your goal. Chapter 6, section 8.4 of the Flat World Knowledge Handbook covers a variety of organizational strategies you may use in your paper. You could study an issue in terms of causes and effects. You might choose to compare and contrast different sides of an issue. Or, you may use deductive reasoning to craft an argument. Either way, you will want to insure that you cover all of the intrinsic points relating to your thesis. You will want to avoid fallacies and analyze in a fair, well-supported manner. Your sources should serve to back up your ideas; they should not be the primary focus of the paper. The following resource also has helpful tips for organizing the body of your paper: http://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/693/1. The end: Always make sure to finish with a good conclusion.  A good conclusion helps readers know what they have learned.  The purpose of a good conclusion in a research paper is not to persuade the reader, but to add to the overall effectiveness of your argument.  When writing a conclusion, it’s not necessary to rewrite your thesis. Instead, refer to it briefly and remind readers of the main points.  Avoid sounding preachy in your conclusion. Instead, simply remind readers of main points and end with something that will leave a lasting impression such as a provocative quotation, a vivid image, a call to action or a warning. A sample conclusion paragraph follows: The most important aspect of elephant conservation is the reduction of poaching. The amount of elephants culled or lost due to natural causes is insignificant compared to the detrimental losses due to the massive genocide of poaching. To prevent the further depletion of this majestic species, it will take the efforts of governments at a local, national, and global level to work in conjunction with one another for the preservation and conservation of these creatures. If the steps defined at each level are strictly followed and monitored, further poaching attempts will become extinct, instead of the species. Your research paper should be between 8-10 pages, double-spaced and formatted in MLA style. It should include a cover page and a works cited page, which are not counted as part of the length requirements. The beginning: Your research paper should be organized around a central thesis. PDF The middle: The middle portion of your paper can take a variety of approaches, depending on your goal. “Organize” at the Writing Commons covers a variety of organizational strategies you may use in your paper. You could study an issue in terms of causes and effects. You might choose to compare and contrast different sides of an issue. Or, you may use deductive reasoning to craft an argument. Your sources should serve to back up your ideas; they should not be the primary focus of the paper. Please note: Around 70 percent of the paper should be your own analysis/reflection on the issue, while around 30 percent should be cited material. The cited material supports and adds value to the paper. It should not be the majority of the paper.
