Description

Write a paper (2,000-2,500 words) in which you apply the concepts of epidemiology and nursing research to a communicable disease. Refer to "Communicable Disease Chain," "Chain of Infection," and the CDC website for assistance when completing this assignment.

Communicable Disease Selection

Choose one communicable disease from the options below.

  1. Chickenpox
  2. Tuberculosis
  3. Influenza
  4. Mononucleosis
  5. Hepatitis B
  6. HIV
  7. Ebola
  8. Measles
  9. Polio
  10. Influenza

Epidemiology Paper Requirements

Address the following:

  1. Describe the chosen communicable disease, including causes, symptoms, mode of transmission, complications, treatment, and the demographic of interest (mortality, morbidity, incidence, and prevalence). Is this a reportable disease? If so, provide details about reporting time, whom to report to, etc.
  2. Describe the social determinants of health and explain how those factors contribute to the development of this disease.
  3. Discuss the epidemiologic triangle as it relates to the communicable disease you have selected. Include the host factors, agent factors (presence or absence), and environmental factors. Are there any special considerations or notifications for the community, schools, or general population?
  4. Explain the role of the community health nurse (case finding, reporting, data collection, data analysis, and follow-up) and why demographic data are necessary to the health of the community.
  5. Identify at least one national agency or organization that addresses the communicable disease chosen and describe how the organizations contribute to resolving or reducing the impact of disease.
  6. Discuss a global implication of the disease. How is this addressed in other countries or cultures? Is this disease endemic to a particular area? Provide an example.

A minimum of three peer-reviewed or professional references is required.

Prepare this assignment according to the guidelines found in the APA Style Guide, located in the Student Success Center. An abstract is not required.

Tuberculosis is a contiguous disease attacking the lungs and when not treated it can
spread to affect body parts such as brains and spine. This disease is caused by Mycobacterium
tuberculosis. Tuberculosis assumes two basic forms. First, the Latent TB which enters the human
body but the body immune system stops it and makes it not to spread. This does not make the
body to stop, but the body immune system stops it from spreading. This stops the bacteria from
spreading making in inactive. Inactive TB shows no symptoms. It is not contagious. Second,
Active TB is the germs spread to various parts of the body to an extent that it makes people sick
The named above bacteria cause TB and spreads from one person to the other when some
microscopic droplets spread into the air. This can is easily spread when a sick person sneezes,
coughs, sings, spits or speaks among other things. The major symptoms include the extended
cough that may last for more than three weeks, fatigue, coughing blood, weight loss, poor
appetite, and fever. One has a higher risk of developing TB when one comes into contact with a
person with TB (Sachdeva, and Dutta, 2012). One has a higher risk of developing such risk when
one lives with somebody with TB than meeting a stranger on one occasion. TB can lead to some
health complications such as hemoptysis, bronchiectasis, and malignancy among others.
People with HIV and AIDs have a higher risk of getting TB due to immune deficiency.
Second, Pregnant mothers also have a higher risk of getting this health problem. It also affects
young people and old people since their immune systems are weak. People who suffer from
cancer and undergo chemotherapy as well as people who undergo organ transplant also have a
higher risk of developing TB due to weak immune systems (Abubakar, 2016). TB is a reportable
disease to the department of health to manage it and control it so as to avoid adverse effects on
the human being. Reporting happens when a person is diagnosed with TB and is a risk to the

general population. The health department may decide to deal with the risk to manage TB in the
general population.
Social determinants
The common social determinants of TB are social economic inequalities, population
growth, urbanization, and high population mobility. These factors play a vital role in the unequal
distribution of resources such as food, housing, quality food, finances and healthcare access
among others. This creates variation in the way Tb can spread in different geographical areas.
These determinants have a direct impact on the environmental conditi...
