The American Dream Analysis The idea of the American Dream originates from the Declaration of Independence which states that all men have certain inalienable rights including "Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness." For many, the American Dream represents the ideals of freedom, equality, and opportunity that are traditionally thought to be available to every American. Others see the American Dream as a life of personal happiness and wealth. The documentary Park Avenue: Money, Power, and the American Dream argues that the American Dream has become a fantasy because the inequality in the United States makes it unattainable for most Americans. This assignment will require you to consider your ideas on the American Dream and analyze how it is represented in Park Avenue: Money, Power, and the American Dream and The Great Gatsby. You will post your analysis to the blog and respond to one of your peer's posts. *Note: This assignment is based entirely on your own ideas and you CANNOT do any research to complete it. Any instances of plagiarism will result in zero. To begin with, you must watch the documentary. Part 1 Explain how you personally define the American Dream. Do you see the American Dream today as focused on freedom and equality or has it become all about wealth? Do you feel that it is an ideal or something that can still be achieved today? How do your ideas compare to the ideas presented in Park Avenue: Money, Power, and the American Dream? Length: maximum 200 words Part 2 You are to write a second blog answering the fundamental question: Is the American Dream essentially dishonest - must one be dishonest to achieve it, is it unattainable for all - or is the American Dream a spiritually pure and optimistic pursuit of a better future for anyone willing to work very hard to reach their goals? You must reference a specific character from The Great Gatsby and at least one specific concept (statistic, quote or idea) from the documentary Park Avenue: Money, Power and the American Dream. Choosing a character Jordan: Dishonest and deceptive; driven to reach her goals; somewhat sneaky Nick: Probably honest; observes the lifestyles of the young, ambitious, wealthy and poor alike; strives to make his own fortune Daisy: Self-interested; relatively honest; high-income status, old money; apparently oblivious to her advantages in life Tom: Arrogant and completely self-absorbed; relatively honest; high-status, old money; believes in basic inequalities of people based on birth Myrtle: Self-interested; relatively honest; low-status; ambitious Gatsby: Dishonest, but not deceitful; driven to reach his goals; believes in the equalizing power of wealth Length: maximum 350 words Part 3 After everyone has posted, you will read all the posts carefully and respond to one other student's post by sharing your ideas on their definition, their analysis of the documentary, and/or their analysis of their media example. Length: maximum 150 words DUE DATES
