Introduction
There have been continuous debates on whether theorists should focus politics of
recognition which involves evaluation of desperate identities and practices or whether they
should direct their attention on redistribution politics which is based on wealth, income, and
capabilities. The problem is that the two are related and hence one cannot embrace one and forge
the other. For instance, social injustice afflicts classes whereby the effects of the unjust political
economy are experienced (Fraser & Honneth, 2013). Hence, to remedy this there ought to be
economic restrictions. Social injustice is primarily a matter of a cultural devaluation of a status
group’s culture. Remedying it requires that cultural and symbolic changes be embraced. Hence,
at no point should construction of redistribution and recognition politics be considered as
mutually exclusive alternatives; rather, the objective should be to engage in developing an
integrated approach which encompasses and harmonizes both dimensions of social justice. This
paper seeks to discuss both redistribution and recognition politics, outline their differences,
explain why they come under the topic of identities, and highlight the biggest challenge(s) faced
when developing politics of recognition.

The idea of politics of recognition has in recent years become an increasingly popular
