The use and reliance on slaves to meet the colonial demands for labor led to the rise of
the poor and the wealthy class. There was the establishment of the refined class known as the
genteel, free of rudeness. These genteel modeled their way of life on the English aristocracy
which they viewed as refined. The difference between the rich and the poor was seen and
experienced in many ways. One of those ways is the way they genteel set themselves apart from
the commoners was their purchases, displaying of goods and consumption. There was increased
demand for English products which were ship to these British colonies.
The way the poor and the rich were treated was different. Those considered to be of
higher class were given large tracks of land to divide among themselves. These men were of
higher social standing such as politicians and settlers. Every other white man who had not
criminal affiliations was also given enough land to take care of his family. On the other hand,
those considered to be of low social class such as slaves received no land, and they were either
paid too little to support their families or worked for free. This ensured that the rich kept getting
richer as they had free labor from slaves and could acquire more land while the poor got poorer
for they continued being discriminated and enslaved.
The rich or people of the higher class also took part in a sophisticated trade system which
involved exporting goods to Europe where they received goods such as sugar, gold coins, and
bills. They then carried these products to the colonies where they used or traded for other goods
