Chantell Macias Katarzyna Polanska Introduction to Sociology SOC111 February 21, 2019 Socialization Who am I? A three-letter word that makes up a simple sentence, however; the answer to the question is much more complex with a lot of depth. Through socialization my identity was developed and has mold me into the person I am today. Socialization is the process by which cultural is learned. During socialization individuals adopt societal norms and expectations, to accept society’s beliefs and internalize societal values. Socialization is multifaceted that involves many individuals, groups, and social institutions, it is a continuous process that evolves as it helps the individual adapt to new stages of their life. Socialization is essential to a society and the individuals of the that society because it prevents the society from losing its identity as a whole. New members of a society must learn the norms and values in order for them to fit in. I will answer the question, who am I & why am the person I am today very candidly by applying sociological imagination. When I take step back, I realize that I am just another static, as a child I was the daughter of a single mother my parents divorced at an early age of my childhood. Now as an adult I am the single mother and my children are the ones who live in a home where the parents are divorced. Of course, a now divorced single mother is not the only way I view myself, I am also a loving mother, hard worker, & self-motivated individual. The following question I ask myself is, what has mold me into the person I am today, I have become the person I am today through my culture and the agents of socialization. The languages I speak, my customs, beliefs and values is what I learned through my cultural. Agents of socialization that influenced me the most and which I will be focusing on are family, religion, school and mass media. Family the most critical agent of socialization because it is the one that one that an infant will first come in contact with, it is also the one that is continuous though out an individual’s life.

Who Am I?
This is a common question that many individuals ignore and have little time to ponder
deeply to understand themselves. Self-realization leads to self-actualization, which eventually
leads to successful people (Turner, 2010). As such, there is need to evaluate one’s life and
lifestyle and understand who they are, which can help one to advance and become better in many
aspects of life. Socialization is the core process by which one’s character and lifestyle is formed.
It is a gradual process and one changes through learning various things from the society one
interacts with. Socialization is good for any group or society because it fosters the development
of identity of the group or society. This forms the unique culture, behavior, and lifestyle of the
group or community. The new members of the community or society learn the way of life of the
community they are born into. The culture, ways of life, and identify of a group of people is
usually passed on from one generation to another though communication, rituals, and events,
ensuring that the culture is well enshrined into the life of the new generation.
Personally, I am a single mother and I live happily with my children. When I was young,
I realized that I was living with my mother alone and realized later that she was a single mother.
My parents divorced long ago when I was still an infant. As such, all my life I have lived with
my mother catering for all my needs. I must admit that she was a strong woman and she
continues to be, and she has taught me a lot in life. She has brilliantly shaped my character and
ability, and I am now able to stand on my own firm and strong in pursuing my dreams. I
personally view myself as being a hard working person, a loving mother, a God fearing person,
and a self-motivated individual. My family unit played a big role in shaping me. However, other
agents of socialization also played a role in shaping my character and life...
