Question Description

Design Constrains and Criteria Summary Review:

the project documents, lecture slides, and your notes. Synthesize and list the design requirements, and categorize them into constraints and criteria. For each requirement (constraint/criteria) discuss how you plan to measure it. For each subjective criterion develop a rubric that you will use for measurement. Remember that the Universal Design Principles are also criteria.

Open-ended Design Project – Working on an exhibit that teaches children about an engineering concept – Oh Wow! Children’s Center for Science & Technology • Semester long design project which involves a formal demonstration and technical communication • These projects will have both individual and group aspects— meaningful contributions of all team members is expected • Top 15 projects across all sections will participate in the Final Exhibit Showcase during finals week Your exhibit and prototype must adhere to the following Design Constraints: • Cost: The entire cost of your prototype cannot exceed $150 o “Free” materials do not count towards this total, but they must be included in the parts list / budget in the final report ($0 cost). Free items might include: materials that you have lying around at home, donations received from sponsors (up/re)cycled materials • Size: Your prototype must fit in a 2’x2’x2’ volume (stored position) and fit through a normal doorway • Learning Objective: Must relate to one or more STEM concepts or a STEM discipline • Interactivity: Must be interactive – users can vary some aspect of your exhibit and observe a result • 3D Printed Part: your prototype must incorporate a 3D-printed part that your team designs and prints Your team must identify several Design Criteria on which to evaluate your exhibit and prototype, e.g.: • Criterion 1: Educational value: How well does interaction with the exhibit demonstrate the learning objective • Criterion 2: Incorporation of at least two Universal Design criteria • Criterion 3: Support current core exhibit areas of: Avionics, Brain POWER, Early Childhood, Earth & Weather, Engineering, River of Knowledge, and Sound and Light. • Criterion 4-5: As a team you must identify two additional criteria, which could include: o Other Customer Priorities: safety, portability, fun, originality, visual appeal, durability, etc.

DESIGN REQUIREMENTS

Introduction
The characteristic of every single design are usually described in terms of design criteria
as well as design constraints. A design constrain in this case being a condition or limitation that
should be satisfied by a given design, while a design criterion is simply an attribute or standard
of design that can be measured. Both criteria as well as constraints are used in steps of design
processes to be able to ascertain which designs should be implemented (ElMaraghy, 2006). In
this paper, design requirements will be identified and categorized into constraints and criteria.
Afterward, the way to measure each requirement will be discussed.
