A Letter to Eleanor Roosevelt Primary Source. After reading that document, please complete the following writing assignment.
Post your response to the following questions about the letter sent to Eleanor Roosevelt. This assignment is to be completed inside this forum post. This is not one of your discussion forums for this week, but is a separate writing assignment.
1. Analyze the letter for its relationship to the economic crisis that was going on in the United States at that time. In other words, how does a letter and request such as this fit within the historical time-frame being studied?
2. What might you be able to infer about the woman just from reading her letter? Economic status? Educational status? Pride? Provide examples from the letter to validate your answer. Also, in your response, tell me what infer means and why your response is an inference.
3. Evaluate the impact that this letter has obviously had on historians trying to relay the hardships families faced in the Great Depression? What strikes you as the most compelling point in the letter that would illustrate that?
4. Why is this considered a primary source? To answer this, define and explain what a primary source is and then relate this source as an example of it.
5. Using GMC's databases, provide another primary source from this historical era that is similar to this. Provide the link to that source in your response and then explain why you chose that example.

week 9 journal
Compare two of these films you watched this week, in terms of their styles and how they handle content. How are their styles similar, and what distinguishes one from the other? As always, choose at least two scenes (one from each film—or more if you wish) to use as supporting examples for your argument. Screen shot each of them. Be specific in your analysis, and do not summarize. Django Unchained (2:45:00)Django takes the Hollywood Western and puts it to revolutionary use as a vehicle for the story of a former slave turned bounty hunter/cowboy. Django is hell-bent on freeing his wife from the clutches of a sadistic slave owner who bought her when she and her husband were sold separately by their former owner for trying to escape. This summary barely does the film justice. It’s brutal for sure, but—like all of Tarantino’s films—has comedic moments, an incredible script that re-envisions the conventions of this genre, and performances that are unforgettable. Jamie Fox plays Django with passion and panache.Seven Samurai (3:27:00)This epic film by the great Japanese director, Akira Kurosawa, directly provided the plot for its Western counterpart, The Magnificent Seven, but even if it hadn’t, Kurosawa’s work is something every film student should experience. This is a simple story of a poor town under attack that recruits seven unemployed Samurai to protect its people. However, watching the cinematography and the way the narrative unfolds is akin to taking a master class in filmmaking.3:10 to Yuma (1:53:00)Although made in 2007, this is an old-fashioned, classic Western in the best sense. It has many classic Western tropes and even takes place shortly after the Civil War. It’s a battle of wills between the two main characters, an honest rancher and a complex, ruthless bandit. The rancher volunteers to get the outlaw on the 3:10 train to Yuma for the price of $200, but we know it can’t be that simple.

Cuyahoga Community College Indian Music Culture Research Paper
You are required to write a 5-page (double-spaced, standard tabs) research paper about a musical culture NOT covered in this course. Areas covered in this course include Indonesia, Japan, Middle East, Sub-Saharan Africa and Latin America, so you can choose any part of the world OTHER than these. Some areas to consider are: Native America, Polynesia, Australia, China, Korea, India, Ireland, Portugal, Greece, Caribbean, Arctic Circle.... wherever, as long as it's not covered in our course. For this assignment, please use Nettl's 3-part model, addressed in "Unit 1: Introduction" and Chapter 1 in our textbook. Focus on the Sounds, Behaviors and Ideas or Conceptions that govern the sounds and behaviors of the musical genre/activity you choose. It's best if you stick to a specific genre or ensemble from whatever region you choose for this research paper. For example, if you wanted to write about music from Spain, don't try to summarize all Spanish music (too broad, too big) but pick a specific genre or activity to focus on, such as Flamenco. Want to research Hawaiian music? Stick to hula or string bands. The point is, focus on one genre or activity from a region and give in-depth details, not just a broad, surface cultural overview.Sound:What sounds are you hearing? Talk about the instruments (and voices) of the musical genre/activity. What are they made of and what do they sound like? Are there any rules or restrictions surrounding these instruments, like who can play or when one can play? Can you comment on the texture and form of the music? Texture refers to layers of activity. How many musicians are present and how do they relate to one another? Form refers to how the music is organized and presented,. How long does a performance last and how are the melodies and rhythms arranged. Lastly, what does the music sound like to you, the outsider?Behaviors:What activities are associated with this musical genre/activity? What are people doing while this musical activity is happening? Is there a specific purpose or function surrounding this music, or is it just for enjoyment/entertainment? Does this musical activity have any behavioral restrictions regarding religion, age or gender? Is everyone participating communally or are the musicians/singers/dancers presenting music to an audience.... why? Lastly, can you draw any connections to musical behaviors in your life or culture?Ideas/Conceptions:What ideas or conceptions govern the sounds and behaviors of your chosen musical genre/activity? Why are people creating this music and why are people participating? Address ideas surrounding history, culture and musical evolution. Most musical genres throughout the world express indigenous and foreign, or outsider aspects. What traits are uniquely regional, or indigenous, and what traits are coming from an outside influence and why? Again, almost all music has a combination of both! How have politics, religion or human migration affected this musical genre/activity? Lastly, can you relate what you learned to your own life experiences? This assignment is worth a lot of points (120 points/12% of your grade) and required to pass the course.Due at the end of the course, but you can submit anytime! If you have further questions, please contact me and I can help!PreviousNext
