How to write your AD Analysis

Live action commercials fall somewhere between print advertisements and movies. They often have plots, characters, and music, in addition to trying to sell their product. When you choose a commercial (preferably one you feel passionate about), you’ll considering its unique combination of appeals and visual argument, and how these elements work together to persuade an audience to buy the product. How are these appeals conveyed? What techniques is the ad audience that looks at, supports, or responds to these ads?

You will want to start with a brief description of the advertisements. This should only be a paragraph or so. Other description, in more detail, should be interspersed throughout the paragraph when you’re analyzing different aspects of the ad.

Consider things such as: who is in the commercial (is it anyone famous?), color space, mood, product being sold, models used (race, gender, class of those models), use of dialogue, text, and where and when the commercial is aired. You may also consider: cinematography, dialogue, lighting, music, story, audience expectations, product being sold, and the importance of the central character (including his/her effectiveness). Try to boil down the advertisement’s argument to its most extreme message.

The commercial on YouTube or some other site, and post the URL, properly cited, at the end of your essay on a separate works cited page.

This advert features two young adults who share different moments together with Extra Gum as a key part of their love life (Extra Gum, 2015). One of the key visual elements of the video is its purpose. Ideally, the video is meant to advertise Extra Gum, which is a key product of Wrigley Company. This can be identified in product placement in which the product features in almost every scene throughout the advert. At the same time, this product serves as the center of focus throughout the advert as it is portrayed as something that brings together the two young people and maintains their relationship. The second key element is the target audience. The video targets high school students and young adults. All the people featured in the advert are of a young age. At the beginning of the ad, students can be seen entering premises that are labeled “High School”. This is clear that the video has been developed for the purpose of targeting young people. A different key element in the video is the point of focus or the focal point. In an article by Dallas Learning Cloud (n.d), a video’s point of focus serves as the center of attention and reveals the meaning of the video to the viewer. In the selected video, the focal point is the young lovers. While the two individuals are featured in every scene of the video, the background and other people in the video are blurred. As a result, the video focuses on these people and their love life and portrays the featured product as a unifying factor. When they meet at their first instance, the young lady hands the young man a gum, which serves as the beginning of their long love life. Another element of the video is the theme. This video conveys a theme of love and a sense of confidence. According to Dallas Learning Cloud (n.d), there is always more than meets the eye in a video. By combining both audio and visual elements, the video creates a theme of romance and confidence. Extra Gum appears to create confidence among the VISUAL ANALYSIS 3 participants from the beginning to the end of the video. At the same time, this video is accompanied by a romantic song. With the two young people appearing to be madly in love with one another, it is clear that the video communicates the concept of love and links it to the product being advertised. What starts as a friendship that is created with a mere sharing of a gum flourishes into a romantic relationship and ends in a marriage proposal. Other visual elements include lighting and ambiance. According to Berger (n.d), ambiance and lighting are some of the extensively used elements in a video to convey the mood of the video and create meaning. Other than a scene where the two young lovers are filmed in the dark, all the other scenes are brightly lit. The background creates a positive mood that conveys the aspect of love. In summary, the advert featured in this assignment advertises Extra Gum. The video utilizes various visual elements including lighting, ambiance, a point of focus, and selective background elements to convey the video’s theme, purpose, and target audience. This way, the creators of the video are able to market their product as a source of love, something that brings people together, and an important part of young people’s love life.
