The use of illicit drugs began for recreational purpose in the 1870s when drugs like
marijuana were available in the American streets. Later, forms of opiates were discovered to
serve as painkillers and were nicknamed miracle drugs. The health sector started using them for
an aesthetic purpose, especially during surgery; for example, marijuana was used.
Cocaine was used to treat patients with depression. It was one of the ingredients of a
coca-cola mixture. Most drugs were used for medical reasons, and their effects were not realized.
Doctors would recommend the use of heroin and morphine as the remedies of alcohol addiction.
At around 1970s the Drug Enforcement and the Mental Health Administration conducted
research only to realized that the narcotics were additive and had negative mental effects (Kerr,
