Description

- Qualitative Research - The interview

Where to begin? Disasters are a social phenomenon , affecting society and its individuals. Investigating the needs and responses of the people to these stressors, as they perceive them, is a complex problem. Behavior analysis and observation can see the results of the affected persons's thought process, but can it necessarily explain those thoughts and motivations?

One method of 'getting inside someone's head' is to get them to reflect and attempt to explain their perceptions and logic, based on their beliefs. This is an incredibly important task, as you explored in the "whole community" approach of Disaster Management Foundations. We do this through interviewing strategies.

This week, we will explore the many facets of interviewing, and begin to craft such a tool (interview guide) on our movement towards a trial study. The assignment requires you to think hard about who you would get data, and asks you to design your interview guide. A Pilot Interview should be the culmination of your preparation work this week.

An upcoming project as a group is the conduct of an interview related to volunteering to the community in general. You may use this week's work to address the issues of that assignment along the way.

- Questions :

1. Explore your interpretations of the various forms of interview, and the possible application to the field of Disaster Management, here. Collectively, conclude the best application for our purposes.

2. Display your Interview Guide (your crafted questions relating to your research question or hypothesis), and critique (positive and possible misunderstandings) your peer's guides. This is an opportunity to "pilot" your questions and themes. Make sure to 'annotate' in your guide what specific information or data you are seeking!

THE INTERVIEW 2 The Interview Qualitative research applied in Disaster Medicine and Management Foundations can be either semi-structured, unstructured or structured. Researchers utilize purposively these different forms of qualitative study methods depending on the outcomes of the investigation. An interview guide based on qualitative research can be established to explore more on disasters in a community Djalali (2011). An interview that establishes good rapport among the participants provides the interviewer with a better chance to source reliable and substantial information about the subject matter. Semi-structured forms of an interview should be applied in Disaster Management. It forms the ideal nature of discussions while investigating preparedness, unpreparedness, and mitigation of various kinds of disasters in the society. The interview format has a specific protocol, which guides a researcher throughout the procedure, thus enhancing the aspect of conversation within the dialogue. Khankeh (2007) emphasizes that the element of a discussion is paramount since it enables the investigator to establish a good rapport with the participant. The bond helps in probing the interviewee with intriguing questions for more profound insights about opinions; towards disaster in the community. The featured interview guide would be based on management emergency officials, planners, and other practitioners in DMM. This rubric will probe the participants to provide information pertaining the vulnerable population affected by a disaster, demonstrate their awareness of the victims' needs like emergency services available, and form an estimation of those most affected by natural disasters like a hurricane. Questions that need interviewer’s prompts include; are you aware of the emergency services available for helping victims during and after a disaster occurrence? How many THE INTERVIEW 3 households are likely to be affected by a hurricane in a year? Could you identify the most vulnerable population against disasters in Americans? Addition conversations are expected to be incorporated within the stated questions, thus probing the informants, including emergency department officials as well as the victims, to provide information that they may be withholding unknowingly. However, the expectation that informants will act in good faith shall serve as the primary assumption amongst peers’ guides.
