The key roles of a journalist are to search, investigate, prepare, write and report stories. A
professional journalist’s main job is to make use of various media channels such as newspapers,
radio, television and the internet to disseminate news stories to the public after he or she has
prepared and written them. As a professional, a journalist has roles and responsibilities that he or
she needs to undertake in a professional manner. The first is the ethical role of a journalist.
Journalism demands professional ethics in the manner in which stories are passed on to the
audience. It should be done in a transparent and swift manner without biases. The second role of a
professional journalist is to act as a guide to the audience by ensuring that the relevant and
important stories, features or news are presented to the audience in a timely manner. The third role
of a journalist should be to investigate the truth and present the facts to the audience without hiding
crucial information from the public (Hellmueller & Mellado, 2015). This includes acts of
investigative journalism which focus on unearthing information which may be hidden from the
