Bernardo Bellotto’s The Campo di SS. Giovani e Paolo, Venice; 1743/1747; oil on canvas;
Widener Collection 1942, September 7.
This painting depicts a city square in Venice, Italy. Generally, the mood of the painting is
tranquil as every character seems to be going about their daily business. The painting is on a
horizontal rectangular canvas hence bringing out the landscape of the captured square. The
horizon line in this painting is not uniform throughout. The highest points are towards the left
and right of the painting and the horizon line there is around one third from the top of the
painting. The lowest parts of the horizon line towards the middle of the landscape are half way
