Kalapuyans
The kalapuyans are an ethnic group of which consists of at least 13 independent tribes
who speak three mutually unintelligible dialects. The kalapuyans were inland people whose
subsistence crops comprised of vegetables and different kinds of berries.
Archaeologists found remnants of the kalapuyans after an engraving of a full body
drawing of a kalapuya person. The kalapuya person who is a hunter wore moccasins, an elkish
dress, cap of foxskin and quiver of sealskin. In the drawing, the kalapuyan is on European-styled
footwear which is an indication that there was ongoing trade. Archaeologists also found an ashbark parching tray which was used by the kalapuyans to shake coals with seeds over fire so as
enable parching. They also manufactured items like stone mortars, cattail mats, woods, bone,
pestle, antlers which were often decorated. Their material culture is likely to survive in the
