Section One
Innovative Change

I usually work in one of the healthcare facilities in Australia. The healthcare facility was
previously using paper format records but is currently adopting electronic health records (EHRs)
due to the development of technology. The electronic health record has made the institution to
change significantly, and it is still undergoing the change process (Ben-Assuli, 2015). Every
healthcare professional was used to recording patient’s information on paper format documents
such as the use of record books and files. However, the implementation of the electronic health
record has contributed to the transfer of all the information into the computer system, where the
previous paper documents have been kept in a store for future reference.
Change Model
Drivers of the Organizational Change
The adoption of electronic health records has resulted due to the emergence of
technological development as the primary driver for organizational change. Most of the
healthcare facilities in Australia among other countries have adopted the EHRs as a new system
of recording patients' data. This has forced the hospital where I work, to adopt the system so that
it can change which changes in technological development. The other driver that has contributed
to the adoption of the EHRs is the increase in the number of patients that attend the hospital for
healthcare services. The increased number of patients has made it hard to record the information
of every patient in a paper document, thus leading to the introduction of EHRs where the
information for millions of patients can be recorded. The EHRs also ensure quick access to
patients' information.

Kotter's Model of Critical Steps
According to the Kotter’s eight steps theory, there are eight stages involved in an
organizational change. The first step involves the creation of urgency where the leader of change
shows the reasons for adopting a change in an organization. The second step is building a
guiding coalition that displays the employees how to conduct the change process. The third
process involves the formation of a strategic vision and initiative to help in performing the
change process. The fourth stage is concerned with the communication of the vision that has
been developed, to inform the people in the entire organization (Henry & Thompson, 2017). The
next stage involves the removal of barriers that could act as an obstacle for the change. The next
step is concerned with generating short term wins that will motivate the employees within the
organization. The seventh step involves sustaining the acceleration through building on the
change. The last one is to adopt the changes and stick them into the organizational culture.
