simplify the expression

2(3x-6)-(5x+3)  Distribute the 2 to the first part of the expression

(6x-12)-(5x+3) Distribute the - to the second part of the expression

6x-12 -5x-3  Put like terms together

6x-5x-12-3 Simplify

x-15 This is the final answer

thank you for helping me with this problem i understand it all the way up to when the 3 turns to negative I'm not sure why it does that and doesn't continue to stay positive

No problem! Let me see if I can explain it another way.

For the moment, let's ignore all of the problem except for -(5x+3).

When there is a minus (or negative sign) in front of parenthesis it acts as a -1.

Let's rewrite it as -1(5x+3)

When we distribute we see :

(-1)(5x) + (-1)(3)

-5x+ (-3)

As you can notice, it looks weird to have the plus sign there. So, we can simply make it as

-5x-3.

Does that make more sense?

im having some more trouble....

-5.5(3x+6)-1.4(2x-4)

Aug 31st, 2015

Don't let the 5.5 and the 1.4 confuse you. It works just the same

-16.5x-33-2.8x+5.6 (remember a negative multiplied by another negative is positive)

-16.5x-2.8x-33+5.6
