Abraham Lincoln was born on February 12, 1809, in Hodgenville, Kentucky, USA, and
was the sixteenth president of the United States of America, a post he held from March 1861
until his assassination in April 1865. Lincoln led the United States during its Civil War, the
bloodiest conflict, but also the biggest moral, constitutional and political crisis. By doing so, he
preserved the Union, abolished slavery, strengthened the federal government, and modernized
the economy.
The arrival of Lincoln, a small Midwest farmer at the White House, marks the progress of
the abolitionist idea and the loss of the influence of the plantation owners. Born in a small
Kentucky farm, the new president was an austere and pious man. He had spent his youth without
going to school, and after working on the farm, he was a worker on a shipyard and also a sailor,
for a while. Established in Illinois, he has gained, through a bold effort, a vast culture of being an
autodidact. Oratorical talent, land honouring, and determination made him be elected a deputy in
