Ethical Decision Making

Part One:
Conflict of Interest
Conflict of interest refers to a situation in which factors at play shape a particular course
of action (Strom-Gottfried, 2014). For instance, a professional accepting a gift from a client can
result in a conflict of interest if it hinders one from carrying out professional duties such as
holding the client liable for a particular action. Also, it can lead to seeming conflicts of interest if
other clients perceive that accepting a gift from the client has led to preferentialism.
Boundary Confusion
Boundary confusion refers to a situation in which a client believes that a gift he or she
has given to a professional signifies friendship or reciprocation as friends expect (StromGottfried, 2014). Accepting gifts from clients leads to boundary confusion since one will expect
that the professional will favor him or her in future interactions.
Non-maleficence
Non-maleficence is an ethical precept for health professionals or health-care providers
dealing with their responsibility to reduce or prevent harm- specifically during research (StromGottfried, 2014).
Reversibility Test
Reversibility test refers to a test that identifies an agent, describes an action, and
identifies stakeholders and their actions (Strom-Gottfried, 2014). An appropriate reversibility test
treats others with respect and ensures free and informed consent, privacy, freedom of conscience,
and freedom of expression. Pitfalls to a reversibility test entail failing to identify and address

Beneficence refers to the principle of making efforts to maximize the possible benefits of
the research or secure the wellbeing of the participants (Strom-Gottfried, 2014). The key to
beneficence is, since research entails both risks and benefits, one should ensure that they balance
to promote an outcome that is positive and beneficial.
Part Two:
The six-question or 6Q model is a model that integrates steps and features mainly found
in decision-making models for assisting professionals. This model requires one to ask
him/herself six questions to think through the considerations needed to decide an ethical course
of action (Strom-Gottfried, 2014). These questions are not ranked in order of priority, or the
model is not a linear process. A major assumption of the model is that its users have selfawareness and the capability to recognize and act on ethical dilemmas. These are components of
professionalism and qualities of virtues that maintain focus of socialization and people learn and
join professions. The six-question model entails six questions that are:
