In what ways do Mazower and Hobsbawm agree about how they characterize the
interwar period? Identify and explain the different political responses to the dislocation of
the interwar period.
The European political climate varies as described by Mazower and Hobsbawm in their
analysis of the forms of government preferred throughout the 20th Century. Alto of things
changed in the interwar period whereby the society was recovering from WWI and scared of a
similar event which came to pass as WWII. Mazower describes the democratic form of
governance to be useful but not the most preferred as it involves the opinions of the public,
something that challenges the rulers. The 20th Century indicated how difficult it is to achieve
democracy judging from the communist and fascist leaders who dominated the period. The brutal
leaders were taking unacceptable measures against the minority groups or opposition to keep
them stronger in power (Mazower, 2009). Hobsbawm also holds a similar idea about the interwar
period by connecting it with capitalism which created a tensed political environment. The
perspective in this source is however more positive as it brings in the aspect of communism as
