Introduction

Every market has its own characteristics. As such, the experiences of firms in the same
industry varies from one country to the next. In this case, this is true of airlines in China’s air
transport industry – just as it is true of airlines in other countries. However, in the global context,
it is hardly possible to view airline firms in China – or any other country – purely on the basis of
domestic factors. Global factors plays a role as well. Zhang and Chen (2003), for instance,
observe that China’s airline industry has been evolving toward international liberalization.
However, again, the impact of global factors varies across firms depending on their size, which is
related to their target market. Still, importantly, the domestic market still has significant power in
the international industry De Jong et al., 2018). As such, the nature and operations of airlines of
any airline in any country will exhibit both domestic and global habits. This is true of China
Southern Airline, which is an international airline. It is subject to both domestic and international
factors. These include certification requirements and regulation, among other domestic trends,
although these too may have been influenced international air transport macro- and microenvironmental factors.
