Literary Analysis
The short story, “Where are you going, where have you been?” is a literal piece that
Joyce Carol Oates wrote in 1966. The story starts with the main character, Connie, spending
much of her time looking herself at the mirror, with friends, and meeting boys. The fifteen-yearold girl seemed to loathe everyone around her either because she thought they were not pretty
like her or they hated her. She has a 24- year old sister who is nothing much like her. June is the
complete opposite of Connie, but her mom nags to Connie about June's well-mannered behavior.
Connie encounters a creepy character while going out with Eddie. The creepy man would
resurface at their home at the driveway insisting on going away with her. Notably, the short story
contains several literal devices that the author expresses and this analysis will be looking into
some of them.
Primarily, one of the common literal devices is the use of motifs. Motifs are a mental
hitch that represents an object or phrase which repeatedly appears in a story (Zwaan 250). The
