This is the answer Response one: Question 1: The Hmong traditional child birth is extremely different then the American ways. They have a lot of rituals and ways as going into labor versus being out of labor (after birth) and so fourth that are different then the way Americans give birth. The Hmong do not like to normally go into hospitals opposed to Americans who normally rush to the hospital while in labor. After birth mothers drink hot water to relieve the cervix and let it relax, but when Foua was in the hospital after they gave her cold water which was a change for her. For Hmong's normal birth consists of them keeping the placenta and burying it so when the child dies it can trace it's steps back to its original soul but for Lia hers was thrown away instead of being kept. One main difference was also how the baby was washed in the hospital different to Foua's hot steam bath which she thought cleaned her baby off more. These differences can affect health care because with the different remedies she did versus the hospital it may not make her trust the hospital as much or think they are respecting the ways she once did things. These differences can be addressed to enhance the experience by seeing the ways professionals handle situations maybe somethings they do families may like and will continue to do in their own homes. All these new cultures can help them see other pathways on how things can be done, or will maybe make them turn a blind eye towards it because it is not their norm. Some of these things could possibly scare away families as they do not feel comfortable of the way they are birthing their child or do not understand the remedies being performed. Question two: Some American doctors' perceptions and stereotypes are like in Lia's case during her medications she is suppose to be taking the doctor's sometimes feel the parents either do not care or do not understand how often they need to be taken. Some doctor's feel Nao is very hard headed and is resisting giving her daughter medicine because he is resisting treatment, while they think Foua is dumb. When the simple answer could be, they do not understand what to give her and do not want to force anything down her throat. Another instance is when Lia fell out of her bed because the parents were mad she was tied up and wanted her untied. They thought they were protecting her because they do not understand why she needed to be secured during her seizures and were mad at the doctors when ultimately it was their fault. Their stereotypes could hindrance the care of their daughter because some doctors maybe scared of treating or overstepping their culture. Some maybe hesitant in treating Lia due to this, and especially with none of them speaking English makes things even more difficult. The negative stereotypes that could be addressed are even if you feel a certain way do not act on it. We are all human, we all are here to save this little girls life, and even if you think the parents are not caring the best for their child in your opinion, find another way to help them understand how they can. They love their daughter, they are just in another mind set and I think you have to put yourself in their mindset to to understand what they are going through. When their daughter has seizures they feel this is good because it is a blessing and she could be a Shaman, but medically this is hurting her brain each and every time. Somehow you have to figure out a medium and try to help without overstepping. Children are usually the most delicate members of the community. Their value is priceless because it is only through them that a population lives to the next generation. This paper shall compare two organizations the Hmong and the American, it shall look at how they give birth to their children and how they bring them up. Also, the impact of this process to the children’s health and how it will improve better healthcare can be attained for the children. The traditional Hmong practices on childbearing are based on cultural values. When Lia Lee siblings were born, they were born as per their Hmong traditions where the mother delivered them with no help of a midwife, and she did not make any noise while providing the baby. This is very traumatizing for women while they are giving birth. The American childbirth process women have the aid of midwives. They apply their professional skills to mitigate any complication that may arise from the process of childbirth. Birth complications may occur during the process of birth, some of these complications have severe implications to the health of a child at times newborn loses their lives but with the help of modern birth methods lives of a newborn can be saved. The Hmong birth process allows a woman to give birth at specific locations, but the American birth process has no restrictions on the places which a woman can give birth. The limits set by the former may affect the child’s health during the birth period. This can occur when a mother is due for delivery, and her location is not in the specified places by their culture. She will have to hold the infant in the womb until she arrives at the required area. Health wise this is wrong for the health of the infant. In some cases, it might lead to the death of the infant inside the mother’s womb or head complications due to delays inside the womb. The American system does not believe in “dabs” to influence the birth process. A woman can give birth at any location as long as she is due and the environment is friendly to her and the infant. (Fadiman, 1998). Cultural practices vary from one culture to another; these practices may be positive towards the general health and at times detrimental towards the health of the people involved. Harmful cultural practices should be abandoned since the impact they have on society is detrimental. Positive cultural practices should be incorporated with modern birth and child-rearing practices, which should also be adopted by the American and Hmong cultures.
