Running head: CULTURAL IMMERSION PROJECT PART 1 1 Need Assistance Correcting this paper. This paper was completed by another tutor that I have not used before. It’s not flowing and has numerous grammatical error. I am needing this changed and corrected. I have also attached the rubric for your viewing. Cultural Immersion Project Part 1 Name Institution CULTURAL IMMERSION PROJECT PART 1 2 Cultural Immersion Project Part 1 Lessons learnt about prison culture through reading scholarly articles Reading several scholarly books, I have realized that prisoners have varied cultures depending on the prisons and individuals in the prisons. In prison, like the free world, there are different hierarchies usually with hardcore criminals leading the top position of the hierarchy (Trammell, 2012). The petty offenders occupy the lowest position, unless they change for the worse while behind bars. Prison life as much it is assumed to be a place where order is restored into the minds of the offenders behind bars, several analysts have blamed the prison way of life for generating worse criminals that the type that is initially jailed (Smith, 2014). Different people depending on how much they are feared and how long they have been locked tend to be in control in different prisons, occasionally controlling even the wardens. Corruption and other social vices are common in the prisons. Prisoners bribe the wardens to access favors such as drugs and other amenities that they may not be entitled to or if given, they are given in limited amounts. Sodomy and other immoral acts such as rape are also common in most federal prisons leading to infections of sexually transmitted diseases. Prisoners also kill each other in cold wars between rival gangs in the prisons (Skarbek, 2014). Life in prison is almost similar to life in the jungle where the rule of life is survival for the strong. The weak keep getting weaker while the strong ones keep getting strong. In some text, I realized that for some prisoners, it is more comfortable in prison that in the free world. CULTURAL IMMERSION PROJECT PART 1 3 In conclusion, I realized that prison culture does not always change people for the better as it is supposed to be. Instead, the prison culture may influence petty criminals with potential to being hardcore criminals to being worse by the time they are released. Lessons learnt through interacting with websites, online papers, and other media sources related to the culture My observation from these sources of information was not so different from the scholarly articles. In essence, prison is a place where people either become better or worse. There are gangs that control the operations in the prison and the lawlessness is more inside prison walls as compared to outside. Like in the scholarly articles, I confirmed that there are hierarchies in prisons, with the topmost positions occupied by hardcore criminals who give orders to their subjects. Some articles suggested that in some instances, these criminals even controlled the wardens. The hardcore criminals are most likely drug kingpins who generate revenue from importing drugs into the prisons and selling them with the help of corrupt warden officers. The weak ones in the prisons are hardly cared about, they are usual the ones harassed both sexually and otherwise. Sodomy in men’s prisons is common and yet victims hardly report due to the corruption and lack of concern in the part of wardens (Brown et al., 2013). The more religious and peaceful prisoners survive in small groups and read and write books. The language used in prisons is full of vulgar words and respect is not given to everyone. Apart from the negative side of the prison culture, people worship in their days of worship and some people actually change for the better. People also enjoy the times they are CULTURAL IMMERSION PROJECT PART 1 4 visited and write letters to their families that give them hope to keep hopeful for better days when they finally get released. In conclusion, in prison, laws do not apply as much as they do in the free world. People do not respect each other’s rights as much as it happens for free citizens. It is unfortunate that the culture cultivated in the prisons is contrary to expectation of the public. Surprises about prison life In my search for knowledge about the prison culture, I was surprised to learn that some people actually enjoy the life they lead being locked in prisons. These people prefer being locked in prison either because they conduct their businesses inside prison and make more money or they came from the streets and have nowhere else to go after jail term is over. I did not expect that any one in there right state of mind would prefer prison life. Expectations from the searches From the search in the internet, books and other sources of information, I have learnt that when one needs to analyze literature more carefully to get a deeper understanding of the reality. I therefore expect to learn things I did not expect from the different discussions about different cultures. I expect to acquire an understanding on the reasons as to why different cultures behave the way they do. During the group activities to come, there is need to increase active participation for the sake of understanding cultures more. This is because there is usually more to the cultures than the stereotypes that people believe. In order to achieve the objectives of attending is course, I would therefore be keener on the details that make the deferent ways of life as to be a counselor, and I would need such deep understanding. It is my hope that other student’s researches on this topic about their different cultures of choice has made them more CULTURAL IMMERSION PROJECT PART 1 5 eager to learn more as this is key to avoid judging people based on their culture. I would also like to visit a prison to get a chance to see what goes on in the prison and confirm what I have read in my different searches. The visit would provide first hand and confirmatory information as what I got from the different sources is certainly not conclusive. CULTURAL IMMERSION PROJECT PART 1 6 References Brown, M.
