Midlife crisis is an issue that faces both men and women between the age of 45 and age
54. This period in an individual’s life is marred with apathy, drastic mood changes, mood
swings, depression, and impulsive actions and decision making among many other symptoms.
According to Elliot Jaques, a psychologist and person behind the term midlife crisis, the
experience is also characterized by one's reflection on mortality which can be overwhelming.
Death, he claimed, became a personal matter for those experiencing the midlife crisis, as
opposed to it being an event expected to take place at a future date. Additionally, he argued that
the first achievement of middle-aged people was their opportunity to move above youthful
idealism to what Jaques termed as contemplative pessimism and constructive resignation. Middle
age is also a period in which people get to a level of maturity and can overcome their denial of
death and human destructiveness.
