Question 1
“The Shabbat” is a chapter in Marjanne Satrapi’s autobiography titled Persepolis: The
Story of a Childhood. The mood is tense and distressing as there is a lot of anticipation with
regards to what disaster is about to strike next. This story is set in the city of Tehran, Iran,
during a time of massive civil unrest and rebellion. Marjanne describes her local
neighborhood as a fairly developed community. Due to the rebellious attacks happening in
this city, many people flee after news spread of an imminent ballistic missile attack.
Marjanne explains that people had to flee because “ballistic missiles are so powerful that only
reinforced concrete shelters, such as those in some of Tehran's hotels, can withstand the
explosion” (p. 19). She realizes that her family and her community is in great danger but her
parents insist that they stay so that she can finish her French education, since they believe it is
her only hope of having a good life outside the country. The city is deserted and the austerity
and anxiety are well evident in Marjane’s description. The attack eventually happens, and
Marjane is devastated at losing her friends and neighbours.
One theme that is well developed is religion. During the bombing of the Baba-Levys’
house, who are Jewish, Marjanne’s mother explains that they must have been in the house
observing their holy day. Marjanne wishes beyond luck that they were in the hotel during the
missile attack. However, her worst fears are confirmed when she sees the remains of Neda
Baba-Levy in the rubble. The theme of war and rebellion is also evident in this story, given
that the terrorists stage these attacks to create fear among the public and send a message to

the government. Lastly, the theme of family unity is well exemplified in this scene. Despite
the grave danger in which Marjanne’s family finds themselves, they stick together through
thick and thin.
Question 2
“A Pair of Tickets” is the final chapter in the The Joy Luck Club, which is a novel by
the Chinese American author Amy Tan. The novel is a coming of age story that describes the
adventures of...
