Research and Ethics in Psychology

Developmental psychology attempts to understand cognitive, physical, and social-emotional development throughout the lifespan. In order to understand, for example, how maternal stress during pregnancy might impact the child later in life, pregnant women and children could be studied. Vulnerable populations, such as pregnant women, newborns, children, cognitively impaired individuals, incarcerated individuals, or older adults, require additional consideration and protection when planning to conduct research with them.

When conducting research in the field of human development, particularly with vulnerable populations, it is important to keep in mind that a unique set of ethical considerations should be taken into account. These populations need extra care to ensure their rights because some individuals may lack the mental capacity to give informed consent, may have decreased free will, or may be vulnerable in terms of their physical or mental welfare. As you approach this Discussion, keep in mind how ethical considerations might have affected the type of research that could be conducted.

For this Discussion, you will examine the role of ethics in developmental psychology research as it relates to vulnerable populations.

To prepare for this Discussion:

  • Review the example of a Discussion post and response found in this week’s Learning Resources as well as the Discussion Rubric to understand the Discussion’s expectations.
  • Review the Learning Resources related to ethics and research in the field of developmental psychology
    • Individuals with cognitive disabilities - Pick this one for discussion and write a post with max of 1000 words

Running Head: ROLE OF ETHICS IN DEVELOPMENTAL PSYCHOLOGY
Ethics in developmental psychology has various roles. Researchers in developmental
psychology are required to adhere to the set of ethical standards. While conducting research with
individuals with cognitive disabilities, the researcher is required to adhere to the ethical standards
so as not to harm the individual with a cognitive disability either physically or psychologically.
The researcher is thus obligated to choose the least harmful research procedure. This is because
individuals with cognitive disabilities already have existing limitations such as social skills,
communication, taking care of themselves and even mental functioning. Therefore, ethics in
research concerning individuals with cognitive disabilities enables the researcher to conduct
research without harming the individual physically or psychologically. This is in adherence to
principle number one which is concerned with non-harmful procedures.
If a researcher conducting research with individuals with cognitive disabilities does not
adhere to the set ethical standards and principle number one of non-harmful procedure, the
researcher might harm the individual and cause more problems. This is because those individuals
may be vulnerable in terms of mental or physical welfare. The researcher must, therefore, follow
the ethically set standards while conducting research so as not to cause more harm and problems
to the individuals with a cognitive disability.
Ethics enables researchers conducting research involving individuals with a cognitive disability
to seek consent from the individual they are researching on or the caretaker. This is because
individuals with a cognitive disability cannot take care of themselves. Therefore the researcher
should, therefore, seek the consent of the caretakers since they might even provide more
information to the researcher than the individual with a cognitive disability. Consent seeking is
in regard to principle number two and it enables the researcher to be comfortable while
conducting the research. This is because if the caretaker of the individual with a cognitive

disability does not consent to the research, the researcher would have a hard time. Ethics in
research involving individuals with cognitive disability enables the researcher to seek parental,
informed and additional consent (May, 2017). With these consents, the researcher is able to
