Discuss what is meant by open-air drug markets and raves, and identify what the police are
doing to control these problems.
Open-air drug markets are considered the basic level of drug distribution networks. The
buyer and the seller are expected to locate one another in order to successfully complete the
transaction. This implies that open-air drug markets operate in well-defined geographical
locations at specific times to make it less difficult for the buyer and the seller to locate each
other. Purchasers know where to go and can easily determine quality against price while sellers
get to broaden their consumer base. On the other hand, raves are characterized by dance events
that depict loud music and flashing lights. Typically, fliers and advertisements circulated at clubs
are used to promote such events (Harocopos & Hough, 2012. Various products are sold in these
events including water, pacifiers, and drugs.
Responses to the drug problems are tailored to the local environment. Police strategies
are designed to tolerate low transactions in a single location rather than dispersing, which could
birth other satellite sites leading to significant growth of the market. Containing a market at low
