Thank you for the opportunity to help you with your question!

Hello!

5-x-2=3+4x+5

The first step is to combine like terms on the right side, and combine like terms on the left side.

So, 5-2-x=3+5+4x

3-x=8+4x      Let's add x to both sides.

3-x+x=8+4x+x

3=8+5x    Subtract 8 from both sides

3-8=8-8+5x

-5=5x Divide by 5 to both sides

-1=x

Therefore x=-1.

I'm still confused

What is confusing you exactly? I can add a lot more detail if you would like.

3-x=8+4x How you got that.  Can't you just add 3, 5, and 4 and get 12x?

No, you cannot.

Before I continue to explain, here are a few things you need to know

variables= are numbers represented by letters (so in this problem, that is the x)

constants= any number that is listed

You can only add like terms (constants with constants, variables with variables).
