Description

This is a final project. there isn't as much for how long it should be and I know this might be more complicated to help with. I don't care that you won't be doing a ride along. I was diagnosed with cancer so I just don't have the time to get a ride along in.

Police Ride-Along Project
Police ride along is a process by which an individual is allowed to ride along with police
officers while on duty. A civilian, journalist, or a student can arrange to ride along with the
police in the squad care while observing the routine of the police officers as they conduct their
duties and responsibilities as law enforcement officers (Waters, Robben, Giacomantonio &
Herbert, 2008). On numerous occasions, the legal age for a person to ride along with the police
officer is 18 years old. A civilian rides along with a police officer for a whole day where one
appreciates the role and functions of police officers. Ride along civilian are at risk of their safety
since they can experience an unexpected encounter with heavily armed criminal gangs. The
impact of the situation becomes a risk when a person is caught in a crossfire between the police
officers and criminals (Waters, Robben, Giacomantonio & Herbert, 2008). This report entails my
ride along project with a patrol officer attached to St. Paul Police Department in the City of St.
Paul, Minnesota, United States.
As a student at Inver Hills Community College, I did my ride along project for my Police
and Community class to have a first-hand look at the interactions between the police and
community. For me to request a whole day to ride in a squad car with a law enforcement officer,
I looked at the city’s website for instructions. After contacting a designated contact within the
police department, I was given a ride along request form that I filled. On the morning of the ride,
I checked in with the front desk officer who directed me to a patrol officer who was waiting in
the lobby. I did my ride along project with the facilitation of a patrol officer named Smith.
Dressed in a patrol uniform, he welcomed me with a study handshake then proceeded to give the
waiver to sign. My ride along project began with a tour within the police department where I met
other officers and the support service staff. One thing I noticed is that this police department had

a good number of female police officers. I was awestruck because law-enforcement is an
occupation that is dominated by males.
After taking a tour in the police department, we got into the squad car and started the
patrol. Pulling out of parking lot, Officer Smith briefed me about his background as well as what
I was going to learn. Officer Smith began working for St. Paul Police Department at the age of
25 when he came out of training. His father who was also a police officer influenced him to
become an officer. Growing up, he watched his father help people and desired to become a
police officer so that he could help the community. He has been working for the department for
the last 25 years, making him the longest-serving member of the department. Officer Smith
attended college and attained an associate degree in criminal justice. After college, he joined a
police academy and joined a training program that lasts for 14 weeks. At the Academy, he
learned most of the staff that he has come across in his police career such as using a firearm,
administering first aid, responding to emergencies, and self-defense (Krimmel, 1996). As a cop
at St. Paul Police Department, Officer Smith indicated that he does 30 hours of annual training
with four hours specializing in cultural diversity. He has also learned other languages such as
Spanish to enable him to communicate effectively with the increasing Hispanic population in the
country. Since the 9/11 incident, he has taken classes in Arabic.
Officer Smith informed me that as a police officer, one is charged with preventing crime
and maintaining order. To achieve these functions, one has to work with community residents,
including the youth to produce public safety. As a seasoned police officer, Smith informed me
that he engaged several youths in the process of community safety. As we continued to patrol, he
started following a car one block away for a broken taillight. He pulled the woman driving over
but did not issue a ticket for having a broken taillight. Instead, he gave her a warning and warned
