The story “To Build a Fire” is set in the intense cold of the largely unoccupied Yukon,
and establishes the thematic role that will be played by nature from the beginning. The nature is
awe-inspiring, harsh, and extremely cold. It is as well terrible in its unresponsiveness to the life
of individual humans. The fatal flow of the man and his lack of knowledge on the power of
nature is established instantly. The man has no interest because he lacks imagination. He is
resourceful and competent, but realistically, not interested in the meanings concerning things.
The temperature of fifty degrees below zero does not motivate the man to imagine his own
limitations, the meaning of life, or the prospects of life after death. The restricted imaginations of
the man make him to underrate nature’s power. He is as well self-assured in his skills of survival,
which depend on artificial resources and not natural abilities.
As the man walks, he spits speculatively to realize that the liquid from his mouth freezes
in the air while falling. The man thinks that the temperature is fifty degrees below zero. He is
hiking alone toward the Henderson Creek where the boys, his travelling companions were. The
man plans to arrive at the camp at six O’clock, shortly after dusk, with the hope that the boys
will welcome him with hot supper and with a fire. In this instance, the boys stand for civilization
and nature’s protection. The man is unaccompanied in nature, and this is dangerous. The f...
