Introduction
The Haitian Revolution which started in 1791 remains the most successful revolt by slaves
against their slave masters that led to the independence of a country. The slaves in Saint Domingue
(as Haiti was known by that time) rose up and destroyed all of the major sugar plantations which
were the backbone of the economy of the country at that time. Through the leadership of Toussaint
who was a black leader who had been educated and was respected by the whites and the slaves,
the slaves were able to form slave armies which successfully fought off the French slave owners
that led to the independence of Haiti. The revolution horrified other white racists, slave owners
and colonialists around the world at that time (Johnson, 2018). That these naïve African slaves
who were poorly armed were able to drive out and take control of the economy which was so
lucrative from the powerful empire at that time was unthinkable.
The Causes and Motivations of the Revolt
In general, slavery in the Caribbean and throughout the Americas was very brutal and
dehumanizing. However, in Saint Domingue, slavery was at another level mercilessness. The slave
