The code of silence in the police department occurs when an officer(s) opts to withhold
what is believed to be relevant information both voluntarily and involuntarily. It is either kept
because of threat, danger to oneself or being branded as a traitor/ outcast within the police
department. The police officer who would help the victim decides to protect their fellow officer
from their wrongdoing. However, the police department can employ high levels of integrity and
decide to follow the law to protect the citizens from abuse of their rights. The police agencies
