Protecting U.S. Magnesium
The U.S. magnesium manufacturers and their employees are the primary beneficiaries of the
country's anti-dumping duties levied on Russian and Chinese magnesium imports. The Chinese and
Russian producers sold magnesium below the market value before the ITC ruled in favor of the U.S.
Magnesium. The two competitors intentionally used the price tactic to drive off the sole American
producer of magnesium out of business (Mastel, 2016). Therefore, the antidumping duty protects the
local producer from unfavorable foreign competition. U.S. magnesium reaps from monopolizing
production, raises prices which leads to substantial profits. As a result, the 400 local employees
benefits through increased wages rates.
