To find the range when Mary Sue ran the fastest, you will
need to find the range with the steepest slope.You do this because you want to find where she traveled the
most amount of kilometers (y-axis) in the least amount of time (x-axis).You can see from the graph that ranges
(0-4mins) and (14-16mins) are definitely not the steepest slopes, so you will
need to calculate the other two time ranges.
slope = change in y / change in x
slope = (3-1) / (14-8) = 2/6 = 1/3
slope = (6-3) / (24-16) = 3/8
Now you need to determine which is bigger (1/3 or 3/8)
Convert them to same denominator, which is 24.
1/3 = 8/24
3/8 = 9/24
So 3/8 is bigger, which is the slope from 16-24 minutes.
