Case management in the context of criminal justice is described as the process in which a
certified social worker ensures that social, medical, mental wellbeing among other basic services
is duly provided to arrestees, probationers, and people under parole. The main aim of case
management is to help these populations get a smooth transition back to society. Most times
these people are viewed as outlaws and outsiders to the society; therefore, getting some of the
most basic services could prove to be a difficult task for them. It also serves to reduce the risk of
them relapsing to their criminal activities as a result of joblessness and homelessness. Mental
health of such people needs to be properly monitored after they serve their time in prison and this
also falls under case management. In addition to this, substance abuse could arise from these
populations which further require that a well-structured case management approach is taken to
eliminate chances of this happening.
Case management typically takes two forms namely; Strength-based management in
which a client is made to focus on his or her strengths as a person in order to better themselves
while at the same time their negative behaviors are equally disapproved. Assertive case
management basically involves a rather aggressive approach where the social worker physically
visits the client at home or workplace and finds out their progress.
