500mg of compound A is dissolved in 10mL of ethyl acetate. This solution is then rinsed with 10mL of H20. The ethyl acetate is then evaporated leaving behind 450 mg of compound A. Determine the portion coefficient.

Am assuming it should be partition coefficient which refers to the distribution of a substance between two phases.

Kpartition = [X(phase 1)] / [X(phase 2)]

Kpartition = [A(aq)] / [X(ethyl acetate)]

K= 450mg/50mg = 9

partition coefficient of compound A in water/ ethyl acetate = 9

how are you getting 50? Are you just taking the 500mg/10mL of ethyl acetate? If so why do you do this?

450MG WAS LEFT BEHIND IN WATER

INITIALLY THERE WAS 500MG OF COMPOUND A

THE COMPOUND A THAT WENT TO ETHYL ACETATE = 500-450 = 50MG
