Problem solving can be a challenging activity for any company manager. Problem
solving requires proper skills and knowledge to address issues and be able to come up with
effective solutions. With good problem solving skills, a company manager is able to create an
environment where company policies are adhered to and objective met (Bigelow, 2017). This
paper will explore a problem scenario involving John, a successful sales manager who leads a
group of sales representatives, but has encountered the problem of serious misunderstanding
with some of his juniors to the point of one the representatives threatening to quit. This paper
will analyze the problem, suggest options to solve it and discuss the solutions implementation
Definition of the Problem
The main objective of any leader is to make appropriate and effective decisions
whenever he or she is faced with problems. Leaders are expected to be problem solvers. As
the CEO in my organization, I should be able to gather the courage to tackle problems headon (Aczel & Patille, 2016). However, I must be resilient enough to sustain the objectives put
in place for the people and organization I serve. From the problem scenario, John’s work is to
give instructions on what is to be done and provide guidelines whenever there is a need.
However, recently, John has been under attack by his juniors for his criticism on petty
mistakes. They argue that instead of correcting them, he constantly harasses and condemns
them to the point of demoralizing them. One of the sales representatives threatens to quit
because of John's unrelenting behavior.
Analysis of the Problem
An analysis of the issue reveals that there is a misunderstanding between John, the sales
manager, and his juniors, the sales representatives. This misunderstanding could be as a result
of several things. Firstly, it is possible that John could be overly strict on his juniors to the
point of stressing them. On the other hand, the sales representatives might be having
problems meeting the required company targets which might explain John’s frustration.
Finally, there could be a problem in communication between the two levels of employees
which could have led to the problem. In this regard, as the CEO, I would take the step of
indulging the sales team by addressing the issue together.
Generating Options for solving the problem
To generate solutions to the problem, I would first summon the sales team and indulge
them in finding the root cause of the misunderstanding. I would ask each one of them to
explain the problems they face while working with John as I evaluate their arguments. At the
same time, I would ask John to shed light on what he thinks the issue might be.
After hearing John’s arguments and those of his juniors, I would confer with some of my
management colleagues or board members concerning the issue before taking a drastic
action. I would take the problem seriously and act urgently because it has involved one of the
