Some of the factors that
encouraged the development of an American identity include the following:
Feeling of being an outcast – majority of the
people who immigrated into the United States belonged to the fringes of the
countries that they came from. For example, the Irish felt left out from the
old world. Settling to America gave them a new chance to recreate the life they
wanted for themselves and this also became an opportunity to develop a new
identity for them as a people.
The newness of America – historical accounts
written in 1600 to 1800 unilaterally mentioned the harshness of the environment
at that time, and this environment helped shaped an American who is hard
working, and who values freedom above all things.
On the other hand, the factors
that impeded this development are:
The fact that the United States were ‘claimed’
by the British government had led to an American identity that is fractured and
wary of people who are different. This ownership pitted ‘natives’ against ‘settlers.’
It took a long time before American identity integrated that natives are also
Slavery also led to the further the divisiveness
of this identity. People were segregated according to the color of their skin
and its impact can still be felt today not only on the American identify but
also in the societal development of America itself.
Finally, the historical
development of the American society affected the development of the American
identity. What I am saying is the history of the United States affects its
people and its people affect its history.
