A research paper on pilot shortage, i have a brief outline attached. Analysis the cause and the problem of pilot shortage and what we can do to solve it. and maybe talk about how technology (drones etc) would affect pilot shortage.

Individual Project Proposal The global airline industry continues to grow rapidly due to economic, technological, and demographic changes. As a result, it has been estimated that in the next 20 years the industry will need to find an additional 558,000 new commercial airline pilots to sustain itself. Topic: Is pilot shortage a threat to General Aviation? Outline: - Research current pilot trend in the industry - Pilot trend in the U.S. vs Asia - Current data on pilot demand vs industry demand - Current Supply of pilots is decreasing - What is the problem? - Aging population - Decreasing military training - High flight instruction costs - Increase in government requirement - Future projections - Problem - Can the growing demand be met? - What would it affect? Airlines? Military? - Solutions? - Competing for talent - What can employees offer? - Educational Program for youth - Using innovation to overcome training requirements - Pending research

Is Pilot Shortage a Threat to General Aviation?
Research current pilot trend in the industry
Introduction
The term pilot shortage has developed to be the most common word in current years and
has been added to the dictionary of aviation. The aviation economists, airlines, consultants of the
aviation and the authors of aviation have provided a warning towards the shortage of pilots. Most
of the airlines, for example, the Republic already have started feeling about the shortage of pilots
and its effects, while the rest of the airlines try to find the solutions for mitigation of the effect of
the shortage. Certain controversies still exist about whether the shortage of pilots can be a factor
not. This research aims so that it can demystify the meaning of pilot’s shortage and also explains
for instance if the shortage can be true or false. This research explores the factors that have led to
the shortage of pilots and exactly what is triggering about the increment to this shortage
(Cummings, Stimpson and Clamann, 2016). Additionally, the research also exposes effects about
the shortage of pilots caused on airlines, in the economy for the U.S and the pilots. Most
importantly, this research analyses the solutions that are currently being applied to make the
effects to become minimal for the shortage of pilots and also if the solutions can be effective for
the implementation or may not be effective.
Problem - Can the growing demand be met?
Therefore, the research project answers the questions for example:
1)

What are the scope and definition of the shortage of pilots?

IS PILOT SHORTAGE A THREAT TO GENERAL AVIATION?
2)

3

Which of the factors resulted in the pilot shortage and still continue to make the

progression very difficult?
3)

What is the effect of the shortage of pilot on the airlines, the economy within the U.S

and pilots?
4)

Which solutions are being put so that the shortages of pilots can be mitigated and

whether they are effective or not?
5)

What are the best solutions to be implemented?

What is the problem?
The scope and definition of the shortage of pilot
The shortage about pilot definition depends largely on the view for someone about the
shortage of pilots. It is true that the pilot shortages exists as described by certain authors of
aviation and depends on whether it has been referenced for the regional airlines or the major
carriers. To other authors of aviation, the shortage of pilots is because of the decrease in the
number of pilots who have been qualified, but it can be due to the refusal by the pilots so that
they are not able to work with the airlines or companies offering little benefits and low wages
(Cummings, Stimpson and Clamann, 2016). To some people, the shortage of pilots is described
as fallacious. Therefore, it never exists since the unemployed pilots are so many and even the
larger number of pilots on furlough. The three observations give further insight into the reality of
the shortage of pilots.
The causes of the pilot shortage

The newly imposed rule by Congress and the FAA has accelerated the growth of pilot
shortage. This occurs through the implementation of certain rules, for example, the quantity over
the quality method of approach. The rule does not just undermine the safety alone, but also
facilitate the growth of pilot shortage while endangering the services in the air through the
increment of education and training costs to the upcoming aviators, creation of the barriers to the
in aviation by recently graduated students with high academic the structured programs of training
and discouraging the investors who are very potential in their desire to pursue the career of
piloting.
The problems of pilot shortage
Current Supply of pilots is decreasing
The shortage of pilots usually affects the airlines within the regions as compared to the
way it can affect the carrier legacy (Lutte, 2018). The view has been based on the knowledge
about the legacy of carriers that always have the bigger pool on the pilots to be selected from, for
instance, the military pilots and also the regional airlines with experienced pilots which are the
pool of pilots that cannot be depleted. Consequently, the regional airlines are not having the
luxury to choose, especially from the number of competent and experienced pilots since their
employees are based on the pilot graduating that seek to gain and build the hours for the flight.
